Sports Redux: Power Outage
You've heard by now about the Red Sox T-shirt buried under the new Yankee Stadium. In all the stories about this yesterday, you'd think at least one media outlet could have mentioned that the Sox' bats were buried somewhere as well.
Only a J.D. Drew home run prevented the shutout, and only a Coco Crisp 9th-inning bunt prevented us from breaking out one of our favorite Major League lines (the one where Harry Doyle cusses on the air, but nobody's listening anyway). Chien-Ming Wang was on target all night, throwing a complete game and getting the Sox to flail away, utterly failing to work a count, heed Wee Willie Keeler's advice ("hit 'em where they ain't") or get anything going at all. End result: 4-1, bad guys.
Clay Buchholz, totally overshadowed by Wang, pitched a tidy six innings, only once walking himself into trouble and giving up an RBI double to Jose Molina. Mike Timlin, however....yeesh. Back from his Pawtucket rehab, he gave up a leadoff home run to Jason Giambi, who'd been hitting even worse than Ortiz, and another run before he was mercifully pulled. We'll have to work on that, Mike.
Mussina goes against Beckett this afternoon, if you're ready to subject yourself to three hours of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver so soon after the World Series. They're the best friends Joe Castiglione ever had.
The Celtics leaned on the PG duo of Rajon Rondo and Sam Cassell to humiliate Milwaukee, 102-86 at TDBNG. Rondo had a nice little 16/5/10 game, while Sam had ten points while leading the B-squad through the fourth quarter. The C's head down to Atlanta tonight, faced with the option of keeping things low-key, or opening both barrels to show the Hawks (likely first-round opponents) what kind of misery they're in for.
TONIGHT: Sox/Yanks, Celtics/Hawks, as we mentioned. Also the Bruins/Montreal Game Two, BC/Notre Dame for the NCAA hockey championship, and (we remembered this time) the Revolution host Colorado tonight in Foxboro. A couple fresh batteries for the remote control might be a good afternoon pickup.
