Thursday Happenings

richard_price.jpgComedy

-- Sketch comedy kings The Kids in the Hall are on tour and squishing your heads. CitiWang, 270 Tremont St., 8:00 pm. (CR)

Fight the Media Power

-- Danny Schechter, "news dissector" extraordinaire, will present "News Dissecting from Boston to a Global Stage: A Multi-media Pioneer Challenges His Profession and Calls for Media Reform." If the title accurately represents the goods, then, sir, we feel your pain. Old South Meeting House, 310 Washington St., 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Free. (CR)

Music

-- Nothing's hipper than wearing White Denim, except maybe listening to them. The Austin quasi-psych group brings vests and guitars to the Paradise to open for Minnesota rockers Tapes 'n Tapes. Does it get any more out there than cassette tape tattoos and off-color denim? You be the judge tonight. Paradise Rock Club, 967 Comm. Ave., 9:00 pm. $16. (KS)

-- Are you painfully alone? Do you like bands with unwieldy names? We've got something right up your alley. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, with Clue to Kalo, Pants Yell!, and Musee Mecanique. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 8:00pm. $9/$10. (KS)

Dance

-- If hipster dancing doesn't do it for you, watch something a little more momentous: the Black Grace Dance Company. The New Zealand company combines Maori moves with modern technique to dazzling effect. Tsai Performance Center, Boston University, 685 Comm. Ave., 7:30 pm, $35-50. (CR)

Movies

-- Movie producer Jeremy Thomas, whose name is on everything from The Great Rock and Roll Swindle to Sexy Beast won this years Coolidge Award. Follow the action with the talk "An Afternoon With Jeremy Thomas" at 2:00 pm and a panel discussion of his movies at 8:00 pm. Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline. Tickets and more information. (CR)

Books

-- Richard Price writes books about class and race disguised as crime novels. Suffering the epithet "a writer's writer," Price cranks out dialogue that would make Raymond Chandler green with envy. He reads from his latest, Lush Life, a study of New York hipsters and their douchebaggery. Harvard Book Store, 1256 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 7:00pm. Free.
