Representing on Reality TV: Hot Stuff

041708-tommy-makeover.jpgBeauty and the Geek: This week, we were surprised that the geeks didn't just toss one of the beauties into the pool and wreck their hair. If they weren't shouting up a storm (Randi) or having problems with basic multiplication tables (Cara), they were squealing about getting dirty (all of 'em). One of the geeks spat toward a beauty. Even though the loogie didn't land on her, Bostonist is proud to say that the behavior didn't belong to a Massachusetts geek.

In fact, this week, our geeks represented themselves quite well, and Sweater Vest Tommy proved to be geekier than we thought. Fans of the show, or maybe friends of Sweater Vest Tommy, have been reassuring us that he is not a plant and is the real deal, even though he is better looking than any other geek who has appeared on the show. During a challenge in which the geeks played firefighter, Tommy proved to be surprisingly athletic. And then he dorked it up a bit by quoting a book of rules on life and how important it is to be someone's hero. Cute. And dorky.

Meanwhile, MIT Chris finished second in the challenge and revealed a competitive streak. He was speedy and athletic in the challenge, and he looked crushed when Tommy pulled the rug out from under him. On the bright side, Tommy didn't send Chris and his partner to the elimination room. Instead, the shoutiest beauty in the house and the self-described "gaysian" got tossed. Next episode, the beauties and geeks are going to a ski lodge, and some romantic shenanigans may ensue. We hear that the clip show, with outtakes, is coming up, and a little bird tells us that we might be extremely happy with a surprise tucked in the special. If you want to know why, watch the sneak peek.

America's Next Top Model: Fatima made a huge mistake. She lost a travel document that she needed in order to leave the United States. Now that's pretty mission-critical. She forgot to shave her armpits, but forgetting a travel document is a major mistake. Yikes. The producer of the show told her that the consulate thought it was "too last-minute." The government isn't going to budge for a reality show.

Meanwhile, Lauren almost cut off her thumb while making potato pancakes, which may have been Fatima Karma after the two got in a fight over an old cup of coffee last week. Luckily, she didn't amputate anything but lost a good chunk of nail. She must have received some wicked painkillers for that one, and she got to make google-eyes at Ric Ocasek without Paulina Porizkova kicking her ass.

A producer set up an appointment for Fatima at the consulate. However, they set up a photo shoot at the same time she needed to go to the consulate, and she missed it. Of course, they could have rescheduled it or set up another meeting for her, so the whole thing exuded fake drama. Of course, Fatima got to stay in the competition and travel with the other models to Italy. It's great that Fatima is staying on, but the conflict seemed way too perfect. Tyra seemed like she was acting like she didn't know Fatima had to go to the consulate.

Things are about to get worse for Fatima. When she gets to Italy, she catches a cold. The Fatima Karma that may have led to Lauren's thumb injury may now be blowing back on Fatima herself.
