Book It: World Book Day
Yesterday was Earth Day, a great time to get outside and appreciate nature. Today is World Book and Copyright Day, and thanks to the gorgeous weather, you can still get out and enjoy nature--with book in hand.
Apparently World Book Day was also on March 6, but there's no reason you can't read a book more than once a year (but at least do it once a year, please). UNESCO's focus on copyright today comes at an interesting time for authors, when more and more content is being digitized and reproduced electronically, making it harder to regulate usage.
Eccentric events around the world include a breakfast for books in support of the Curacao Public Library and a special book menu at the Cafes of Bilbao. There will also 24-hour reading of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables in France on April 26. The U.S. doesn't appear to be doing much of anything for World Book and Copyright Day, which befits our habit of never reading anything at all.
World Book and Copyright Day is also a big book news day: besides Mailer's letters going to Harvard, Vladimir Nabokov's son Dmitri finally decided to pull a Max Brod and publish his father's last novel, Laura, which Vlad had ordered destroyed.
What are you going to read for World Book Day?
