Breaking News: John Lennon Allegedly Smoked the Devil's Weed
Beatles fans' minds were blown Wednesday when word spread that a Lawrence-based video company will face down Yoko Ono in a Boston court case next week, over whether the company can release footage of John Lennon making music and smoking marijuana.
World Wide Video, described as "a New England consortium of Beatles collectors," wishes to release footage that is "intimate and no-holds-barred" in nature. The company acquired the footage in a 2000 sale from Brian Cox, Ono's ex-husband, and was ordered by Ono's lawyers to stop its release plans.
World Wide Video filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Ono in U.S. District Court in Boston. A preliminary hearing is slated for April 30.
This is a complicated case, one that begins with the sale eight years ago. World Wide Video purchased the videos (originals and copies) in 2000 and claims that they were stolen shortly thereafter. Reuters reports that World Wide Video now has possession of copies of the videos, and Ono owns the originals. Ono's lawyers assert that she purchased the videos from World Wide. The question at hand now is who owns the copyright to the footage.
Legal situation aside, we're still back at the descriptions of the footage. John Lennon? POT? Please excuse us as our guitar gently weeps.
