WhiteyWatch: Bulger Totally Rich
Boston loves seeing itself on top ten lists; every time we make a top ten list, we feel like a mighty juggernaut of a city. We are thrilled, therefore, that one of our own, alleged former head of the Winter Hill Gang and previous FBI Most Wanted fugitive James "Whitey" Bulger has made it to Forbes.com's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.
Bulger, who is the only American to make the list, is on the run with a fortune valued between $30 million and $50 million. That's enough money to pay an entire army of elderly guys to wander around Europe looking like you.
Bulger was a dark horse candidate, sneaking onto the list at position nine. But his competition was stiff: Osama Bin Laden, Mexican narco-kingpin Joaquin Guzman, Russian mob boss Alimzhan Tokhtakhouno, and Mumbai criminal mastermind (and film financier) Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar topped the list. Our humble alleged mobster, who is only wanted in connection with 19 murders, rather than, say, several thousand, must have made some good investments.
If rich alleged ganglords were a fantasy baseball team, Whitey would be a strong fourth round sleeper pick.
Image of Rhode Island tourist (and Yankees fan) Robert Dowdy, most emphatically not Whitey.
