Reports From MoFee's Civic Summit
Yesterday, City Council President Maureen Feeney's civic summit brought about 400 people together to get people more involved in city government. Mayor Menino even showed up, although Michael Pahre noted, "Mayor Thomas Menino breezed in -- and out -- of the convention center probably feeling a little bit unwelcome" since it wasn't his idea. Adam Gaffin at Universal Hub live-blogged the event and summed up the takeaways, with education and crime high on the list of concerns.
Matt Viser at the Globe was also in attendance, only the details he caught were on the weird side. Michael Ross, last seen today trying to get Boston restaurants to recycle, has revealed himself to be the go-to guy on all matters food. Viser quotes him as saying, "Raw almonds! They have raw almonds here. Now that's how you elevate an event." Surely Ross was toying with him.
It wasn't just free food, which is, admittedly, the best part about any conference. The summit advised interested parties on how to organize and get involved. On the bright side, the summit was different, as it showed that not all city initiatives have to come from the mayor. It also annoyed Howie Carr, which is always a good thing. However, reports indicate that the summit's substance was more about preaching to the choir. If the people who attended the summit do outreach and get in touch with those who haven't been involved with politics, then the summit could be declared a success.
