Make It Up to Mom: Planning the Perfect Mother's Day

motherdsay.jpgIf you haven't already gotten your mom something for Mother's Day, it's not too late! If she lives elsewhere, there are plenty of florists willing to let you pay the big bucks to get a nice shipment to Mummy Dearest by Sunday, or you can always rush a box of chocolates to your maternal unit. If you're looking for something local or a little more unique, Bostonist has a couple of interesting ideas to share. Being a mom is tough business, so make at least a little effort this Sunday. For those that don't believe in Mother's Day, try to go all out for Mom's birthday or something.

Like most everything on Newbury Street, Winston Flowers is pricey--but at least it's high quality as well. The famed florist has been voted Best of Boston, and turns out beautiful arrangements likely to last longer than your generic internet flower order. Definitely worth a look if your mom's the floral type. The Orchid Guys in Newton are literally just two dudes who dig orchids. The delicate flowers make a distinctive choice in a world of roses, carnations, and lilies (bo-ring). Check out a listing of other local florists if you need something in your 'hood.

If you and Mom like to dine together, here's a comprehensive listing of Boston restaurants open on Mother's Day or offering special MD deals. Plenty of places have a special (if not necessarily affordable) prix fixe for the big day. Highlights include a special menu at Gargoyles on the Square that includes options ranging from hot dogs to smoked duck wings to chicken 'n waffles to grilled swordfish, and--our favorite--a blackberry Nutella smoothie. Yum! If you like your grub a little more spendy, L'Espalier in Back Bay has a special Mother's Day Menu that's "just" $75 per person--perfectly affordable for financial district types. Masona Grill in West Roxbury has a special brunch featuring arroz con pollo, yucca fries, duck dumplings, and more, and is also offering corsages from Tara Florist to moms as a special touch. Brunch it up at the Hotel Commonwealth to be Bostony and fancy at the same time.

mikespast.GIFMike's Pastry in the North End is an infamous destination for sweet stuff. It's sure to be busy on Mother's Day, but the cannoli is worth the wait if you and mom haven't had it before. Phillip's Candy House offers homemade treats including chocolate-covered cherries; as a bonus, through May 31, a portion of all choco-cherry sales go to benefit Rosie's Place.

For the sustainability minded, The Daily Green has thoughts on several earth-friendly Mother's Day gifts, ranging from organic cookies to organic towels (ahh, the towel present) to soy candles. A little yawn-inducing, but fully environmentally approved.

If your mom isn't a typical flower-sniffing, chocolate-snarfing bore (and whose mom is?), more edgy gifts abound. For those prepared to drop some serious dough, a Celtics playoff luxury suite is an amazing way to say, "I hope this 90-minute game makes up for 9 months of hormones, 36 hours of labor, 18 years of frustration, and all the subsequent disappointments I have brought upon our family." Johnny Cupcakes has alterna-shirts for the badass mom, including oven mitt wreath shirts for the baking minded.

pedi.jpgSpa Bella in Davis Square has Weekend Specials including a Peach facial for $50 (1 hour), Hawaiian Body Scrub for $50 (1 hour), and a Pedicure (pictured) for $30, all of which will have your mom feeling more relaxed and refreshed than she has since before your sorry as was born. James Joseph Studio will make mum's hair look smashing, and better yet, if you buy a certificate from there, you get a free cut for yourself! That's two haircuts, one stone... or one scissor(s)?

Sunday is one of the few non-rainy days in the upcoming forecast, so take advantage of this by strolling with Mom along the Charles, in the Common, or even on the Cape if you dare tackle the trip. Remember, the gift of time is worth a thousand chocolates... or something like that?

The Fort Point Art Walk is this coming weekend, and it'd be a good activity to do with your mom, as well as a chance to look for artsy stuff to give her as a gift. MassArt's annual Spring Sale is going on through May 10 if you want to stop by with your mom or to snag her some original artwork.

The Isabela Stewart Gardner Museum, or Izzy S-G's House as we like to call it, is letting moms in for free from 11am-5pm on Sunday. Kids under 18 are also free, so take the whole family for some free, artsy fun. You'll also have the chance to view the enchanting interior courtyard garden abloom with hydrangeas, Martha Washington geraniums (thank god they're not those regular geraniums), and cape primrose.

If that doesn't give you any ideas for Mumsy, try a sweet e-card from someecards.com.

Gargoyles is not located in Cambridge. It is on Elm Street in Somerville's Davis Square.

fixed! sorry about the slip. was thinking upstairs on the square...

I am not sure if most mothers will appreciate someecards.com. Artistic ecards from htt://www.jacquielawson.com or http://www.ojolie.com may be better. Just an opinion.
