Sports Redux: Nobody's Perfect

Yesterday, we gleefully noted that Yankee superstar Joba Chamberlain blew the ballgame on Tuesday night. Well, the wheel of karma moves swiftly and decisively, so today we must report a blown save and a loss for Jonathan Papelbon. Stupid wheel of karma.

It was a roller-coaster of a game, with the Tigers chasing Clay Buchholz out early. The Sox hung around though, as homers by Kevin Youkilis (twice) and Mike Lowell eventually tied it all up at 8-8. The Sox went ahead in the eigth on a Pedroia RBI single. Turn it over to Papelbon, and all set, right?

Well, no. With a man on first, Julio Lugo bobbled a grounder that could have been the first out. A sacrifice and a groundout later, it was tied. Then a Placido Polanco single went over Lugo's head for the game-winning RBI and the end to the Sox' winning streak. Final score: 9-810-9, Detroit. Papelbon falls to 2-1. Josh Beckett goes tonight against Justin Verlander for the Tigers.

Also tonight, a lot of perennial All-Stars have a lot of 'splaining to do as the Celtics and Cavs play Game Two. Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and LeBron James submitted stinkeroos in Game One, but don't count on it happening again. Last night in the NBA, there were two games: Orlando got revenge on Detroit for getting screwed in Game Two, while Chauncey Billups pulled a hamstring and threw this series (currently 2-1 Pistons) into turmoil. Out West, Kobe Bryant picked up his MVP award (boo) and the Lakers took a 2-0 lead over Utah.

Matt Walsh turned in his Patriots video collection to the NFL. Preliminary reports are that the NFL already knows about everything that's in the tapes, and there's no bombshell like the rumored tapes of St. Louis' pre-Super Bowl walkthrough. So maybe all this crap was for nothing. Maybe that was the subject of Roger Clemens' unspecific apology. Who knows.
