Friday Happenings
Music
-- Swedish performer El Perro Del Mar (the nom de pop for the improbably named Sarah Assbring) makes gentle music with flutes, high harmonies, and repetition. It sounds sort of like what Lee Hazlewood would have written for France Gall if he had been a god-fearing eunuch and she couldn't swing. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 8:00pm. $15.
-- Liverpool band Clinic makes woozy, droney rock music that's heavily indebted to the Velvet Underground. If you like vintage electric organs and dudes in surgical masks, this is the show for you. Paradise Rock Club, 967 Comm. Ave., 9:00. $15.
-- Pharoahe Monch is so hip-hop he wrote Diddy's rhymes. With a career spanning nearly two decades (he was half of the duo Organized Konfusion), Monch has an enormous back catalogue. He's one of the few rappers who does vulnerable well -- he's not afraid to tell you about his trip to the shrink -- and his wordplay is unmatched by the current major rap contenders, even when he's ghostwriting. Middle East Downstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 8:00pm. $20.
German Dance Parties
-- The Goethe Institute hosts a 1968 Dance Party, featuring German hits from the era. It was a period when Germany had yet to develop a coherent rock identity, so expect to hear American music squeezed through the aural equivalent of a funhouse mirror. Goethe Institute, 170 Beacon St., 8:00pm. $5.
Kurt Weill
-- The Cantata Singers continue their yearlong survey of Kurt Weill's music with a performance of his second symphony, a setting for Hart Crane's poems. Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory, 30 Gainsborough St., 7:00pm.
Movies
-- The MFA's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival continues tonight with films about the African-American lesbian experience. Museum of Fine Arts. More information.
Art Walks
-- Fort Point's vibrant but overlooked art community will be on display this weekend during the Fort Point Art Walk. A good excuse to explore South Boston. Various locations, Fort Point, South Boston. Free. More information.
