Sports Redux: Road Worriers

It might be important to remind yourself this morning that the Celtics have home-court advantage, and they could still go 16-12 in the playoffs, 0-12 on the road, and still hold up a trophy in June.

But the sad and sorry fact remains that they're 0-4 on the road in the playoffs, and last night they committed the worst sin of all: they were defensively rotten and just plain uncompetitive. With LeBron James still way off his shot, the Celtics allowed the rest of the Cavs to outshoot, outrebound, outhustle them and trounce them start to finish, 108-84.

It got ugly early. With LeBron's woes, old "friends" Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West started the torch relay. Meanwhile, Pierce and Allen looked like their timid Game One selves, Rajon Rondo couldn't get anything going, and the bench, which made the difference in Game Two, kept up the general malaise. Sam Cassell: What happened?!?

So for most of the game, it seemed like the Celtics could cut it to 15 or so, then Cleveland would recover and get it to about 19. Never any closer, not a lot farther (until the end, hence the 24-point final score). The Celtics did look competitive in stretches: KG was solid, and Rondo did have a better second half than first. There's no reason the C's can't beat these guys in Game 4, unless their green uniforms have all been sprinkled with some suck-generating powder.

To get your good feelings back, watch this clip of KG and Bill Russell. It's great.

The Globe, meanwhile, vindicates Mike Bibby and tries to make people feel OK about being bandwagon jumpers. Too bad this article came centuries too late; we could have exonerated Benedict Arnold. The article also mentions there's now a pink Paul Pierce jersey for sale; if that's the case, might as well open the Revelation vials now and put us all out of our misery.

The Red Sox did get the job done on the road. They converted a good Matsuzaka outing and four solo homers (Youkilis, Coco, Jed Lowrie, and Lowell) into a 5-2 win at the Twindome. Lowrie, by the way, could be on the verge of Wally Pipping Julio Lugo, and there's not a wet eye in the house. Jonathan Papelbon regained his mojo, and would have had a 1-2-3 inning if Varitek hadn't lost a popup in the Twindome's baseball-colored roof. He had to settle for a 1-2-4 inning.

The Revolution have a good feeling about today's game against Chivas USA (really?). Their offense, which has struggled mightily, is about to get a boost as superstar Taylor Twellman is expected back as a substitute.

Celtics fans at Bostonist shouldn't panic after the game three loss. I'm sure few people were stunned that the Cavs won last night. The whole emotional-homecoming thing was discussed a lot. The blowout was in the first quarter only as Michael pointed out. The score the rest of the game was 76-71, Cleveland. It's something to remember.

Game four is crucial as the C's can go home up 3-1 off of a win and look to close out the Cavs. Perfect time for the first road win.

I'd like to see the retro road unis they rocked several times this year. Some old time C's mojo couldn't help. Show the boys the Russell/Garnett chat tape Doc, too. And, have KG scream at Rondo.

Absolutely agree on the old-school jerseys. None of the others have worked...
