War Tapes
with Tiger Army and The Unseen
Middle East downstairs, tonight, 8pm, $15
Few things are scarier than wars and armies, so it makes sense that War Tapes and Tiger Army would put on a hell of a show. The Los Angeles-based bands play dark rock with dramatic and psychobilly twists, respectively. Opening act The Unseen is a bunch of local punks who've been tearing it up since 1993, while Tiger Army has an amazing TIGERBAT logo that legions of fans have tattooed on themselves. Seriously. And if that's not enough, they're tattooing lyrics (especially "never die") and cover/poster art, too. We'll have to run to the tattoo parlor this afternoon in order to fit in tonight.
No matter how much polish you like in your music or how much eyeliner (or mohawk) you like on your singers, tonight's show has something to offer you. Each band essentially represents a different state in music's evolution, making for a show that rolls from punky to country to pop, while keeping a hard rock undercurrent consistent throughout. It's a great show to drag your Interpol-loving pals to; if they can stand the punk/rockabilly beginning, their tastes will be rewarded by War Tapes, while you still get to listen to what you secretly love: local kids (two War Tapes members are originally from Natick) all made up for the stage.
