Sports Redux: Schmucks, Lies and [No] Videotape
"...full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing." - Shakespeare, Macbeth
Matt Walsh had his moment in the sun, and it turned out to be a whole lot of nothin'. The ex-Patriots employee promised tales of treachery and devious deeds, and hinted that he had shelves full of damning evidence. Just before the Superbowl, the Herald bit, and published Walsh's claim that the Pats taped St. Louis' final walkthrough before Superbowl XXXVI. Yesterday, Walsh met for three hours with NFL brass, produced zip, and the Herald (as seen here) has public egg on its face.
We'd love to know what Walsh and Commissioner Roger Goodell talked about for three hours. "We already know about that, Matt, do you have anything else?" "I have THIS tape!" "We already know about that, Matt, do you have anything else?" Rinse. Repeat. Walsh, on vacation from his strenous job as a golf pro in Hawaii, will still meet with fired-up Senator Arlen Specter, who is already known for believing some cockamamie things.
Josh Beckett couldn't do his usual job as Losing Streak Stopper, as the Sox blew a 3-0 first-inning lead to lose 5-4 in Baltimore. Luke Scott hit the decisive home run; after the game, Beckett praised Scott: "It was a (expletive) pitch, right down the (expletive) middle".
The Sox, already minus Terry Francona due to a death in the family, also saw Ortiz ejected, JD Drew sprain his wrist, and Coco Crisp come out of the game with some undetermined wooziness. Kevin Youkilis wound up playing right field. Jon Lester will go againt the O's' Daniel Cabrera to close out the road trip. Meanwhile, dozens of Floridians will be clipping the standings out of today's paper; with the Rays' win over New York, both Florida teams are in first place. (Shhhh...the Yankees are a half game out of the cellar....)
The Globe brought in a team of psychologists to try to figure out the Celtics' famed home/road dichotomy. The good news is they're home tonight, for the pivotal Game 5 (every Game 5 is pivotal, but this one feels like even more of a must-win than your standard Game 5) against Cleveland. Whoever does come out of this will face a rested opponent, as the Pistons dispatched Orlando in five games.

Does Matt Walsh have tapes of the Cavs?
