Sports Redux: Complete Control
Last night will go down in history. Jon Lester, who in the last two years has battled cancer and pitched the clinching game in the World Series, threw his first complete game, and, by the way, it was a no hitter. Last night’s historic event was the first no hitter thrown since September 1st of last year. In case you forgot, that was thrown by Clay Buchholz against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway. Lester threw the 18th no hitter in Sox history and was first Sox lefty to throw a no hitter in over 50 years.
Final score: Red Sox 7, Royals 0.
Lester threw a career high 130 pitches, logged nine strike outs and walked two. He also got some help from his team. Jacoby Ellsbury made a great catch in the 4th to save the no-no, and the bats were alive last night. Jason Varitek hit a home run in the 6th and shares the historical spotlight with Lester, becoming the first catcher to catch 4 no hitters in his career. The three previous no hitters came from Hideo Nomo in ‘01, Derek Lowe in ’02 and Buchholz in ’07.
Tonight, all eyes are on the Celtics. No offense to Justin Masterson, who will be getting his second start tonight against the Royals. It's game one of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Detroit Pistons. Maybe if we’re lucky we’ll see battles reminiscent of days when Larry Bird would go head to head against Isiah Thomas.

What a high that was watching that game. Thank you Jon Lester, and thank you, Bostonist, for the great memories.
i'm told he is also the first survivor of non-hodgkin's lymphoma to pitch a no-hitter!
