Pega la Luna, Manny: Pernice Brothers Offer Free Tribute to Slugger

No, you don't need to be a paying member of "Red Sox Nation," and this isn't a jingle for any of his eBay items. Manny Ramirez needs two more home runs to join the 500 club, so you still have a little time to download Joe Pernice's tribute, "Moonshot Manny," for free on the Pernice Brothers website.
Holbrook native Pernice crafted this slinky tune while living over a Brooklyn bar during the '04 season. It's catchy, like the Eels or Tom Waits, and was intended as a musical dagger aimed at the Yankees fans below his apartment. If you sat through the credits of Fever Pitch, you've already heard it. "Moonshot" was previously available for a $1 donation, but you can download it for free until Manny hits number 500.
"It's the least we can do -- and we always like to do the least we can do," said Pernice.
Like Manny when he's being Manny, it's a song of few words, which makes it easy to learn the lyrics. (Bostonist likes the "Pega Luna Manny" line by Portland resident José Ayerve, who translated and sang the Spanish parts.)
There are two sections to learn, and Sox fans should be smart enough to get them down for tonight's game. If enough fans catch on, the tune might become a chant when Ramirez hits his next two dingers. Sing it at Fenway, at a bar, at home, at church, and especially in the face of any Yankees fan.
How long will the song be up? Ashmont Records co-owner Joyce Linehan thinks number 500 will come May 22. "That's the feast day of St. Rita of Cascia, who is the patron saint of baseball, as well as impossible dreams."
