Art
-- From the Electric Studio, opening today, features work MassArt students using electronic media. The show includes "sculptural combinations of interactive, micro-chip, and computer based works," and should appeal to both the aesthete and the gearhead. Work by a dozen artists will be displayed. -- Flora and Fauna features work by painter Joe Keinberger and mixed-media artist Sarah Coyne, kindred spirits who explore the twee and the twisted in the natural world. The opening features a screening of Alert!, a collection of one to four minute long animations by local filmmaker Jim Ether. The screening is sponsored by the Boston Underground Film Festival. Free booze. Space 242, 242 E. Berkeley St., 2nd Floor, 6:00pm-8:00pm (through June 20). Free.
Movies
-- HFA launches its series Shaw Scope: A History of the Shaw Bros. Studio with one of the most widely revered kung fu movies. King Boxer, better known as Five Fingers of Death (1972), was the first kung fu movie to break through to western audiences. A revenge story with nationalistic overtones, King Boxer features action sequences that still boggle the mind. Screening with The Five Venoms (1978). Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7:00pm. $8/$6.
Things Loud and Horrible
-- Finnish band Kemialliset Ystavat make droney and freaky noise music using a wide variety of instruments both conventional and bizarre. Playing tonight with the Skaters and Infinity Window at a house in JP, they will try to use their super psychedelic powers to counteract Boston's noise ordinances. 12 St. Peter St., Jamaica Plain, 6:00pm.
-- It's probably been a while since someone told you to "pick it up." It's a situation that can be remedied tonight: the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble is in town. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 9:00pm. $10.
Comedy
-- The Boston Comedy Showcase XV brings together Boston comedians and out-of-town surprises at a reasonable price. The guests alone are rumored to make this show a bargain. Kennedy's Midtown, 42 Province St., 9:00pm. $5.
