Sports Redux: BEAT L.A.!

I hate LAIt won’t be a series; it’s going to be a spectacle. Last night, the Celtics beat then Pistons and will move on to face the Los Angeles Lakers. It will be the C’s first time at the finals since 1987; the Celtics faced off against the Lakers and came up short in the series 4 - 2. The two teams have met 11 times in the finals; the Celtics lead that with 8 wins.

As tough as a competitor Detroit was, they brought the best out of the C’s in the end and forced them to play hard. The hometown team rallied against the Pistons, after being down by 8 points last night in the third period. Paul Pierce led the team scoring 27 points last night. Detroit’s Chauncey Billups scored 29 points but was 3 for 8 in 3 point shots.

For those of you wondering what the playoff schedule is going to be, get ready for a lot of late nights. All of the games are set to start at 9 p.m. Game one of the series is Thursday night and hopefully the stargazing won’t take away from the real reason everyone is there. But does this mean we're going to have to listen to Randy Newman's 'I Love LA' whenever the games are going into commercial break when they're in Los Angeles?

In the wee hours last night, the Red Sox beat the Orioles in the 13th, 5 – 2. Josh Beckett got 6 innings of work, striking out 10, walking 3 and getting pinned for 2 runs. Beckett was able to rely on a bullpen that’s been shaky in past, but was able to not let another run score through out the rest of the game. With runs driven in by Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp in the 13th, paired up with Papelbon pitching in the bottom of the inning the Red Sox were able to beat the O’s.

Red Sox placed Daisuke Matsuzaka on 15-day disabled list . He seems to be suffering from a rotator cuff strain. The plan will be resting him and then getting him to strengthen the arm so he can pitch the rest of the season. Look for Justin Masterson to pitch his place next week.

TONIGHT: Red Sox sent Jon Lester to the mound, game time is 7 pm.

For those who don’t remember, the whole ”Beat LA” thing began in the closing moments of the 1982 Eastern Conference finals. The Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers had the deciding game well in hand, and the Boston Garden fans, in one of the most incredible displays of sportsmanship in history, began chanting “Beat LA”. The point being “if we can’t beat them, you guys, our most hated division rivals, beat them”. Somehow, in the ensuing years, the Beat LA chant became a general purpose taunting of the Lakers. But, I’ll always remember that electrifying display of sportsmanship by Celtic fans.
