The uteri of an undetermined number of Boston women turned themselves inside out today with the news that a Somerville man had been posing as little-known NBA player Jeff Turner on local singles' message boards.
Ronnie Craven admitted today that he had been using the name of Turner, an unremarkable power forward/center who played ten seasons for the New Jersey Nets and Orlando Magic, in order to get laid.
When reached at his Somerville home by Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Craven explained, "(The situation was) all brought on by an online dating thing. Craigslist. I lied to her. Does that mean I can go out there and represent the Sonics? No. Does that mean that I did it to get some (sex)? Absolutely."
And that's not the only con Craven has pulled. He also managed to dupe the Somerville News and his own family into believing he had a coveted front-office gig with the beleaguered Seattle Sonics.
The Sonics, reached for comment, claimed that neither Craven nor Turner have ever worked for the organization.
It's a cautionary tale, reminding women that not every 6' 8" tall man is the basketball player he claims to be. And it reinforces the truism that sex obtained by means of the internet is sex you could probably do without.
Somewhat unsexy basketball card photo of the actual Jeff Turner in the public domain.
