Paul Sherman wrote the book on movies in Boston. Big Screen Boston, a comprehensive guide to Boston movies and movies set in Boston (there is a difference), provides a narrative for understanding the history of Boston film and a yardstick for judging any future efforts to capture the city on celluloid.
Tonight, to celebrate the book's release, the Coolidge Corner Theatre screens The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), a crime thriller directed by Peter Yates and starring Robert Mitchum. Eddie Coyle isn't just any Boston movie. According to Sherman, it's "the best movie ever made in Boston, a touchstone with a legendary status enhanced by the fact that it’s never been released on any form of home video."
Bostonist got the chance to talk with Sherman about what makes "Friends of Eddie Coyle" great and how you can tell a real Boston movie from an imposter. Listen to our podcast to learn who fakes the best Boston accent and what it takes to film Boston right.
