Sports Redux: Youk Can Go Home Again

youkcincy.jpgNOTE: We're going to try to liveblog the Finals again tonight, so check in around 9 to make sure everything's working. It may get a little incoherent near the end. We hope so, anyway.

With the Red Sox doing their Interleague Tour, Terry Francona has to juggle the lineup a bit, and give guys days off that they don't need or want, since they have to play by National League rules, which don't allow the DH, forbid night games, and require fans to wear straw hats to the games. Quaint. But Kevin Youkilis implored Tito to rest him Friday so he could play Saturday, as the Cincinnati native was expecting a host of friends and family at the game, and he'd prefer they watch him play to watching him sit on the bench and scratch.

The decision paid off, as Youk helped pull the team out of the fire by hitting back-to-back home runs with Coco Crisp in the top of the 10th. Papelbon had blown the save (and, sadly, Wakefield's win) in the 9th by grooving a pitch that Edwin Encarnacion hit into Kentucky. Craig Hansen survived the Reds' half of the tenth to ice the 6-4 win, and a delighted Sean Casey yelled, "Welcome back to the 'Nati, bro!" to Youk after the game. Don't tase him!

All right, enough baseball. Let's focus on what matters - there's a very real chance the skies above New England will be clouded with cigar smoke around midnight tonight. Whether it will be coming from the ground, or from somewhere up above, we don't know. But first, of course, the Celtics have to play 48 minutes of basketball against LA tonight. And we can't stress enough that it would be nice if they did, in fact, play 48 minutes. The comeback was exhilarating and magical and awesome and all that, but we'd love to see the Celtics rip open a 58-33 halftime lead, then watch Laker fans either (a) flee the building like there was a movie star giftbag giveaway starting across the street, or (b) cluelessly chant "MVP" for Kobe while their season bleeds to death in front of them. (If you think we're kidding, even the LA Times is bemoaning the sucktastic crowd of phonies at the game.)

Kendrick Perkins' shoulder was giving him all sorts of trouble at practice, but he naturally wants and expects to play. John Hollinger at ESPN says Doc has been a pleasant surprise in these Finals, which we'd have to agree with. He certainly seems more able than that guy on the other bench. Bob Ryan tries and fails to get us to feel a little sorry for Kobe. Dan Shaughnessy recaps the last 20 years in case there have been any Grenada War veterans hiding out on an island all that time. SI's Marty Burns looks at your potential Finals MVP.
