Philly is a city filled with angry and bitter fans who threw snowballs at Santa. Is it even a shocker that they relished last night when the Sox lost to the Phillies 8–2?
Bartolo Colon was pulled after 4 innings, complaining of back stiffness. The Cy Young winner was tagged for 4 runs, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts, giving up 3 home runs, 2 of them to 2006 NL MVP and former Dunder Mifflin employee Ryan Howard. The Sox got on the board thanks to Dustin Pedroia and former Phillie J.D. Drew, who got a lovely welcome home from the fans last night. Bartolo wasn't the only one complaining of back problems; Kevin Youkilis was scratched from last night's game due to back spasms.
Down the road a bit, Matsuzaka was in Leigh Valley, fulfilling his lifelong dream to pitch against Triple A farm team Iron Pigs and led the Paw Sox to victory. Dice-K had been on the DL thanks to a strained rotator cuff and was making a start for Pawtucket before being brought back to the big team. He threw 65 pitches, struck out 5 and allowed 2 runs. Matsuzaka was the big draw last night for his first ever minor league game.
Game 6 is tonight. There’s a Sox game too, but are you really going to watch it? Everyone in the city seems to be positive about the Celtics' chances. Well, everyone except Curt Schilling’s favorite writer. Beat LA, boys! 17 on the 17th has a great ring to it!

Week Around the Ists, November 1–7

Shaughnessy's column today made me wish I subscribed to the Globe so I could cancel it. What a waste of time and paper and electricity.
i am also really excited that today is 6/17. just like our area code OMG!
and that was a real dick column. dang.
JD Drew didn't play for the Phillies, he was drafted by them, refused to sign, went back into the draft the next year and was taken by the Cardinals. That's why they were booing him....
While that might not be the column I'd write before a potential title-clincher, he did have a couple of valid points.
Game five was there for the taking and the Celtics let it slip away. They should have finished off Kobe and the gang in L.A. when the chance presented itself.
They have chance two tonight. And, Shaughnessy is correct in thinking they better get it done tonight.
