Books

-- Sportswriter and talk radio co-host Michael Holley's latest book is Red Sox Rule, a chronicle of Terry Francona's Sox and their rise to dominance. Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard St., Brookline, 7:00pm. Free.

Movies

-- The Brattle continues its tribute to recently deceased actor Richard Widmark with the 1953 Sam Fuller tour de force Pickup on South Street. Widmark plays a three-time loser, a rube who stumbles into a Cold War espionage plot that results in violence and melodrama. Great dialogue. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge, 5:30, 7:30, & 9:30. $9.50.

Dance Parties

-- Middlesex Lounge mixes it up with a mashup, bootleg dance party. Bootie Boston, which claims to be Boston's first such event, promises to pit Soulja Boy against the GoGos. Middlesex Lounge, 315 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 9:00pm. Free.

-- WORK, a monthly dance night hosted by DJs Mayhem and Ghostdad, brings the low-end to Central Square. This Bostonist can never get enough Baltimore club, but for the rest of you, the DJs will mix in some electro and hip-hop. The Enormous Room, 567 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 9:30pm. Free.
