Boston Derby Dames: Rolling Champs

It's a wicked pissah year again as the Wicked Pissahs skated to their second consecutive Boston Derby Dames championship. About a thousand fans from all walks of life, young and old, gathered at Wilmington's Shriners Auditorium for a 60-minute battle on wheels over three periods. An excitement hung in the air like the delicious aroma of popcorn, dogs, and beer.
After reading the rules in the program and watching the live slow-mo tutorial, Bostonist got the general idea of what was happening. It didn't really matter if you knew which hits were penalties or how many points were scored on any particular jam, because you mainly want to see the action and have a good time.
More reportage and a video and after the jump.

The Pissahs came out strong in the first period, and dominated more than their 11-point lead would suggest (34-23). But, the Cosmonaughties fought hard all night. They picked up some really good jams in the second. The teams exchanged streaks, but the 'Naughties only closed the gap to 53-45 at the end of two. As a de facto Cosmonaughties fan, Bostonist had to admit Wicked Pissahs attacked efficiently throughout when the bout ended 69-58 in their favor.
Even those who didn't pay attention to the score could admire the athleticism of the women speeding around the track, trying to knock each other down. The hits come off like a combination hockey and car racing. Yet, no matter how hard the fall, every derby dame swiftly jumped up right back into the flow.
Campaign for Real Time rocked the intermissions after the first and second periods. DJ Boo Boo Danger kept the Shriners' Fez Room bumping and shaking for hours after the awards ceremony.
