Latin Funk
-- Austin, TX ten-piece Grupo Fantasma has chops strong enough to make you think that its Latin funk comes with a 1973 vintage without sounding corny or derivative. Nonetheless, the Grupo mixes things up with unexpected shots of dubby rhythm that makes its sound unmistakably 21st century. Museum of Fine Arts, 7:30pm. $25/$20.
Latin Jazz
-- The music of Sérgio Mendes actually does come with a vintage: 1961, the year he released his first recording. The Brazilian-born pianist and arranger has been a part of every seismic shift in bossa nova since then, fusing funk, samba, and Latin jazz into a smooth terrine of chilled out dance music. Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square, Somerville, 8:00pm. $33.50-$51.
Movies
-- Once regarded as the Great American Movie (Bostonist likes the chances of John Carpenter's They Live! for that title these days), Citizen Kane is a mannered tale of power, legacy, and truth. You don't actually have to care about those things, however, to enjoy the film. Directed by and featuring skinny Orson Welles. Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, 7:00pm. $5.
Drinking and Drawing
-- The UFO Design Jam pits teams of graphic designers from across the city in a competition to solve design challenges during very short periods of time. DJ Frank White and Oxy Cottontail spin tunes. Church, 69 Kilmarnock St., Fenway, 9:30pm. Free.
Dance Lessons
-- Dance critic Iris Fanger offers a free lesson in the history of Russian dance. Her talk, "Fokine, Nijinsky, Massine, Nijinska, Balanchine: Choreographers of the Diaghlev Ballet Russe 1909-1929," covers one of the most fertile periods in the development of 20th century dance. The Boston Conservatory Concert Room, 8 The Fenway, 7:00pm-8:30pm. Free.
