Sports Redux: Some Country For Old Men
We know that Randy Johnson is a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer. We understand, with our heads if not our hearts, that the only way Tim Wakefield gets to Cooperstown is down Route 80. But last night, they matched up for the 1,334th time in their storied careers, and Wake got the better of the Unit, twirling seven marvelous innings en route to a 5-0 shutout and a 2-1 series win over the Diamondbacks.
Wake got most of his support from two guys who were wearing short pants when Randy and Tim broke into the league. Brandon Moss drove in the first two runs - don't get too excited; it was on a groundout and a sac fly. Then Kevin Cash, bidding to replace Doug Mirabelli in our hearts, launched a three-run shot off sad-sack reliever Juan Cruz to put the game away.
Craig Hansen loaded the bases in the ninth to make things interesting, but Papelbon came in and flame-broiled the one Diamondback he faced to pick up an easy save.
In "oh, yeah, those guys", news, David Ortiz has been hitting off a tee, says it doesn't hurt, and may be swinging again for real before too too long. Curt Schilling's surgery was as successful as can be, and nobody's giving up on the idea of him being back next year. The Sox are off today; Daisuke will try to get his mojo back tomorrow in Houston to start an interesting (Hou, TB, NYY) road trip.
Celtics fans! Remember when the NBA Draft was the biggest night of the year? Remember when we tried to convince ourselves that Kedrick Brown, Joe Forte and Jerome Moiso were going to be competent NBA players? (95% of the people who were at the parade are clicking over to Wikipedia right now; we'll wait). Well, the Draft is tonight, and for the C's, it's about finding a backup or a gamble rather than a savior. Thank God we're not in a position where we have to convince ourselves O.J. Mayo will turn our ship around.
The trading has already begun (Jermaine O'Neal to Toronto, which is a great deal for the Raptors, here in 2003), and the teams at the top are trying to figure out what they're doing. If you're going to tune in, rather that wait for Simmons' diary tomorrow, we suggest playing along with the NBA Draft Drinking Game.
Congratulations to Fresno State, who won the College Baseball World Series, and got to be the happiest people in Nebraska for a little while last night.

I was just thinking a couple of days ago "oh yeah, the NBA draft is this week" It's nice not to have to worry about it, or read mock drafts and all.
Luckily for us, Rick Pitino and Chris Wallace will not be walking though that door on draft night, fans.
