<description>&lt;p&gt;Yes, Vermont officially outlawed slavery in 1777, and there is no record of any slaves in Vermont after 1790.

This puts Vermont ahead of all other states, and far ahead of New England and the Northeast as a whole, which had slavery until the eve of the Civil War.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
