Soup Cans, a blog about journalists, recently posted an interesting interview with former NECN anchor Dan Harris. The Newton native graduated from Colby College and worked at NECN for a few years before joining ABC News. He is currently anchor of World News Sunday.
The Soup Cans interview touches on a variety of topics, including the daunting task of delivering the commencement speech at Colby in 2005, the difficult but useful nature of criticism, and the revelation that Harris keeps photographs in his closet to help him remember which ties match which shirts.
Emerging from Harris's closet to tackle tougher topics, the interview moves on to address what's next on World News. Harris reveals that ABC will run the special "How To Buy A Child In Ten Hours" on July 8:
It's a Nightline investigation. We went to Haiti and negotiated to buy (but did not actually buy, of course) child slaves. Using hidden cameras, we found traffickers who were willing to sell us children--any age, either sex--for as little as $150. We also went out and met child slaves and their owners.
We usually find Nightline slightly sensationalistic, and this episode will probably be no exception, but it's an important topic that gets too little attention. Definitely worth a watch. Harris also recommends the book A Crime So Monstrous, an investigation of modern-day slavery written by E. Benjamin Skinner.
