Sports Redux: Wild-Card Fever Grips Hub
We guess if they'd come into the league as just the Rays (no Devil), they'd probably be working on their sixth pennant this year. But better late then never for Tampa Bay, who extended their AL East lead by dispatching the Red Sox, 5-4, in front of probably the largest assemblage of Rays fans ever.
Things started off badly for Justin Masterson and the Sox, as B.J. Upton hit a leadoff home run. The Sox didn't get their first hit until the fourth, when Pedroia singled and Mike Lowell drove him home. Masterson gave up a 2-run homer to Gabe Gross, and the Sox' rally off Troy Percival fell flat, as J.P. Howell came in to get the final out and preserve the Ray win. Tim Wakefield will try to stop the 3-game losing streak tonight.
Everyone's insisting that the fracas between Manny Ramirez and the Sox' traveling secretary is over and resolved and put to bed. But that's not good enough for Dan Shaughnessy, who has been twitching for months for something to pee on in this Era of Good Feeling. Of course, by reporting that everyone in the Sox organization seems satisfied with the resolution, we're "excus[ing] anything Manny does. Because he can hit," right, Dan?
The Celtics saw their roster shake a little as free agency began in the NBA. James Posey put himself on the market as an unrestricted free agent. Both Camp Posey and the Celtics think they can work something out (please please please), but LA(?) and New Orleans are both expected to make an offer. Tony Allen is also a free agent, and frankly we have trouble seeing him back next year. Elsewhere in the league, Baron Davis chose free agency over the last year of his Golden State contract, and LeBron James is openly pining to play for the Nets if and when they move to Brooklyn.
Willie Andrews, who plays defense and special teams for the Patriots, was arrested for threatening his girlfriend with a gun in Mansfield. He's already in hot water for a drugs charge. Stay classy, Willie.
