Tuesday Happenings
Movies
-- A Jihad for Love documents the inner struggle of gay and lesbian Muslims in 12 countries. The film broadens our notion of "jihad" and presents a queer Islam that we rarely encounter on screen. Filmmakers Parvez Sharma and Sandi DuBowski introduce the film. Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, 7:15pm (also screening tomorrow).
Parking Lot Circuses
-- The Universoul Circus might be the only touring black circus in the country. Started as a makeshift hodge-podge 15 years ago to "explore the various talents other than singing and dancing that black performers had to offer," the event has become a professional level circus, complete with three elephants. Columbus Ave. Parking Lot, Northeastern University, Columbus Ave. and Melnea Cass Blvd., 7:30pm. $17.50-$27.50
Electronerds
-- Between the dialogue samples from cult movies, the ridiculous synthesizer effects, the stilted beats, and the childlike rapping, Rocktapussy could be the unholy spawn of CocoRosie and Pop Will Eat Itself. The Chicago duo brings its turntables, drum machines, and synth pads to Boston with the help of Kaiju Big Battel, whose stars will be on hand to share some hometown nerd cachet. With DJ Clashious Clay. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 9:00pm. $9.
Book Swaps
The Center for New Words presents its monthly Feminism and Dessert event, and it's a book swap. Bring up to three books and leave with as many as you brought. Dessert, as the series title suggests, is included. Center for New Words, 7 Temple St., Cambridge, 7:00pm. Free.
