Sunday Happenings

Quiet_man.jpgMovies

-- John Ford movies don't always get the same critics excited, but The Quiet Man (1952), Ford's movie about Ireland, puts nearly everyone in fulsome territory. Starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, with crack cinematography from Winton C. Hoch, it's what a color picture about the Emerald Isle should look like. Slightly Scarlet (1956), which may be the only Technicolor film noir, also screens. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7:00pm. $8/$6.

Magic Lanterns

-- The MFA presents its second magic lantern show, this time exploring the magic lanterns of Japan. The Minwa-za Company of Tokyo recreates the magic lantern traditions of Kabuki, Bunraku, and other forms of Edo entertainment. Remis Auditorium, Museum of Fine Arts, 7:00pm. $10/$8.

Psychedelic Rock

-- The Impossible Shapes, from Bloomington, IN, offer a 21st century take on the psychedelic pop of the late 60s and early 70s. It's what Marc Bolan would have sounded like if he had ever used nonlinear editing software. With Nurse & Soldier, a side-project from Fat Bobby of Oneida. Milky Way Lounge, 403 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, 9:00pm. Free.

-- Across the Charles, Memphis band The Lovers comes straight from the psychedelic garage, with the faux childish vocals that drive Bostonist batty but that the kids seem to love. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., 9:00pm. $8.
