In addition to that whole All Star Game thing, there are a couple other non-major league athletic events of note coming up. Participate, spectate, or ignore, based on your interest level.
The City of Boston is sponsoring Bike Fridays on July 25 and August 22. These Fridays will allow bike commuters to roll into town in style, accompanied by police escorts within the city limits. We hope that drivers will stop honking incessantly and driving in bike lanes when the police are around. Bike Fridays end at City Hall Plaza with a free, tasty breakfast. The events are also sort of a preview for Hub on Wheels, the September 21 bike ride (choose 10, 30, or 50 miles) that raises money for Boston Public Schools.
If wheels aren't your thing, you can stay on the ground. Registration opened this morning for the Boston Half-Marathon, which will be held October 12. It's a great way to get in a long run that's not marathon distance. It may not have the prestige of the Boston Marathon, but you also don't have to qualify--or deal with Heartbreak Hill.
All we need now is a duathlon to put our biking and running talents together--or maybe a triathlon for those devoted Charles River swimmers.
