The lobster roll, a ubiquitous New England summer treat, is great if you love mayonnaise, but if you can't stand the stuff, like this Bostonist, you're usually SOL. Probably 99.9% of lobster rolls in Massachusetts are filled with lobster salad - lobster and other fillings tossed with mayo. But that other 0.1%? That's where Neptune Oyster's hot lobster roll comes in.

Neptune offers two types of lobster roll - cold with mayo or hot with butter - served with awesomely crispy fries. Both are called "Maine Lobster Roll" on the menu, but the hot version is really a Connecticut-style lobster roll.

The hot version is truly a lobster lover's lobster roll. There's no messing around with flavor - it's lobster and butter, and that's it. The filling was a good mix of dense tail meat and sweeter knuckle meat, and each bite was slippery with lightly salted butter.

And the roll? Nicely toasted, but there was a bit too much bread overall. It was light and fluffy, but it somewhat dwarfed the lobster it contained. While not buttered itself, it managed to soak up quite a bit of butter. However, that caused it to lose some integrity in places, making eating a little more difficult than it should be.
