Thursday Happenings
Outdoor Movies
-- Bostonist can think of no finer movie than Casablanca (1942) to watch outdoors in the sweltering summer heat. Devotion School Playground, 345 Harvard St., Brookline, 8:00pm. Free.
-- Before she became famous for her vagina-flashing coke binges, Lindsay Lohan was a serviceable comedic actress. Mean Girls (2004) doesn't require you to think too much; a virtue when you are sweating and outside. Seven Hills Park, Somerville, 8:00pm. Free.
Lantern Processions
-- Swiping an idea from Japanese Buddhists, the people of Jamaica Plain set flaming lanterns afloat on Lake Hibiscus every year. It sounds very earnest, but you don't have to harbor wishy-washy religious beliefs to enjoy the spectacle. Ron Murphy, Master Tsuji’s Samurai Taiko Drummers, and students from Showa Institute and Chu Ling Dance Academy perform. Forest Hills Cemetary, Jamaica Plain, 6:00pm-9:00pm. Free.
Typography
-- Brooklyn noise crew !!! (one of the few bands that cannot be Googled) bring to mind the dance music of the No Wave: Liquid Liquid and the Contortions. No word on whether the band still plays its minor hit "Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard." Middle East Downstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 8:00pm. $18.
