Saturday Happenings

Roller Derby

-- Boston Massacre, the Derby Dames' traveling team, takes on Ohio Rollergirls. Bostonist is a big fan of the Dames and would attend every bout if they were held in town. Ohio Rollergirls, with a 1-6 record on the year, might just be mincemeat for the home team. Shriner's Auditorium, Wilmington, 5:00pm. $14/$16.

Local Music
Local boy John Paul is no pope, but he does sing divinely. Garnering comparisons to Ryan Adams and Paul Westerberg, he's celebrating the release of his CD "Belmont Boulevard" tonight. Copperfield’s Upstairs, 98 Brookline Ave, 8:30pm. $10 advance, $12 doors. (KS)

-- Local hip-hop crew The Camp throw up battle and party rhymes, in a classic mode, but are not afraid to rock a Burt Bacharach bassline. With Skipp Whitman, ASN and Wally Sparks. Harper's Ferry, 158 Brighton Ave, 9:00pm. $10/$13.

Hip Hop from Out of State

-- MC Lyte has a flow that makes her a perennial favorite when people start making top ten lists about rappers; her hit "Cram to Understand (U)" is a staple in the crates of any throwback DJ. The Brooklyn native joins KRS-ONE, a talented rapper himself who is also prone to ranting. Berklee Performance Center, 136 Mass. Ave., 8:00pm. $40/$50.

Movies

-- Harvard Film Archive Conservator's Choice series opens with a gonzo double feature: Night of the Comet (1984) and Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), a pair of science fiction/horror movies. Conservator Liz Coffey, whom Bostonist interviewed, introduces the films. Harvard Film Archive, Carpenter Center, 24 Quincy St., Cambridge, 7:00pm. $8/$6.
