Sports Redux: Beating Buchholz

redsoxlogo.JPGRemember over the winter when everyone was losing their minds over the idea of the Red Sox trading Clay Buchholz to get Johan Santana. Can we turn back the hands of time knowing what we know now? Maybe the kid is putting too much pressure on himself to live up to the year, scratch that, a game he threw on September 1st. Granted, he’s not failing in Barry Zito proportions, but something isn’t right. Buchholz got tagged for 8 runs in 4 2/3 innings of work last night and the Red Sox lost to the Angles 11-3. And considering the time off in-between games, you can’t really blame this on the schedule.

Both Manny and Youkilis hit home runs off of Jon Lackey, but that did nothing for them. The Angels were double-happy through out the night, and Garrett Anderson was the only one who was able to get Buchholz to give up a home run. The Red Sox bullpen was mediocre at best again, giving up 3 runs. The only one who seemed to have a decent outing for them was Craig Hansen, who’s ERA is down to a whopping 5.27.

Just south of Boston, David Ortiz continued on his town of the Red Sox farm system. Ortiz went 1 for 2, walked twice and launched a three run home run in the fifth, helping the Paw Sox beat the Toledo Mudhens, 6-1. For those of your wanting to check out the freak show, NESN will be broadcasting Ortiz’s last Paw Sox game Sunday afternoon. Old friend, David Pauley will be on the mound for the close of the series.

The Red Sox, who are a half game behind the first place Tampa Bay Devil Dogs, play game two of the series with the Angels this afternoon. The Sox send Josh Beckett to the mound against Joe Saunders, who is currently 12-5.
