Sports Redux: Well, You Can't Lose 'Em All

We at the Bostonist remember a time when many thought the Red Sox were babying Jon Lester. Before the cancer scare and before he had ever threw a ball at Fenway, we kept hearing how special this kid is and how they needed to make sure he was ready for Boston. Cut to this year and Jon Lester, some would say is the ace of the staff. He’s been spot on most of his appearances this season and last night was night was no exception, when he led the Sox to a 4-0 win over the Mariners.

Lester threw for 7.1 innings last night, walked no one and struck out 6. He did have a scare in the 8th inning when a ball went off his right shin, but according to reports he is fine and the incident was a non-issue. Loved by many, besides the New York media, Papelbon was brought in early in the 8th and had no problem taking down the 4 batters he had faced.

It wasn’t just the pitching the won this game, the bats came alive last night. Captain Jason Varitek, who’s had a rough year so far at the plate, hit a 2 run home run off of Jarrod Washburn in the fifth. Followed by Jed Lowrie’s two run single. Lowrie is fitting in nicely and leaving most wondering, "Lugo who?"

After taking a Sunday off, the David Ortiz tour bus rolled into Portland, ME and his stint with the Portland Seadogs officially started. He went 2 for 3, walked and drove in a run. No word yet when they’ll be retiring his number.
