Wednesday Happenings
Portuguese Jams
-- Somerville has loud and proud Portuguese and Brazilian communities, and anthropologist Andrea Allen has been studying them. She presents highlights of her ethnography; her subjects sing and dance. It's the Brazilian & Portuguese Cultural Festival. Expect to hear choro, samba, bossa nova, and Portuguese folkloric music. No word on Portuguese Elvis's plans for the evening. Somerville Museum, 1 Westwood Rd., Somerville, 6:30pm. Free.
High School Jazz
-- Berklee ends its outdoor jazz series with a performance by the Berklee Jazz Workshop, a collection of the most promising jazz performers from around the world. The group performs under the direction of Terri Lyne Carrington and Rick DiMuzio. Carrington, herself a Berklee alumna, has toured with Herbie Hancock. Mothers Rest Playground, Back Bay Fens (corner of Boylston St. and the Fenway), 6:30pm. Free.
High School Melodrama
-- Simple Minds once admonished Bostonist not to forget about The Breakfast Club (1985), and, try as we might, we have not. (Whether or not John Hughes's melodrama about high schoolers who share their secret hopes and fears over Saturday detention will even make sense to teenage Facebook users is anybody's guess.) The film screens tonight with a sneak preview of American Teen (2008), a documentary that explores and manipulates teen stereotypes. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge. [Showtimes and tickets]
New Orleans Jazz
-- The Hot 8 Brass Band has been keeping New Orleans Jazz fresh since 1995. The band blends traditional jazz and funk with hip-hop and were featured in Spike Lee's documentary about Hurricane Katrina. Calderwood Courtyard, Museum of Fine Arts, 7:30pm. $25/$20.
Comedy
-- Over-the-top sketch comedy troupe Anderson Comedy brings its characters, musicians, and stand-up comedians to Jamaica Plain tonight. Milky Way Lounge, 403 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, 9:00pm. $5.
