Thursday Happenings

atlas-sound.jpgOpenings

-- LUMAS Gallery, which already has outlets in New York, Melbourne, Paris, Zurich, and throughout Germany, opens its Boston storefront tonight. The gallery, which prices its wares for the novice (or poor) art collector, features photos and prints by young artists, unknown and well-known. Expect work from Howard Schatz, Alison Shaw, H.G. Esch, David Armstrong, and Edward Steichen. Free chocolate from Lindt. LUMAS Gallery, 141B Newbury St., 6:00pm-8:00pm. Free.

Harbor Sounds

-- Tantankuy, an ensemble of Berklee students and alumni, performs a western hemisphere fusion, incorporating jazz, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Peruvia, and Uruguayan influences. Composers Marcelo Woloski and Andres Rotmistrofsky lead the group, which performs as a part of HarborWalk Sounds, the ICA's series of free outdoor concerts. Institute of Contemporary Art, South Boston, 6:00pm. Free.

Tones and Light

-- AXIOM gallery continues its summer series of experimental sound and video with a performance by NYC sound artist Kyle Bobby Dunn, video from SMFA student Allison Maria Rodriguez, and an experimental performance piece by Sandrine Schaefer and Philip Fryer. Axiom Gallery, 141 Green St., Jamaica Plain, 8:00pm. $7 donation.

Movies

-- The career of Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar has careened from madcap comedy to outrageous melodrama, and he has demonstrated that he can handle anything in between. Viva Pedro, the Brattle's retrospective, opens tonight. Volver (2006), is a masterpiece, a funny family drama about small town life, incest, and female companionship that features no male lead but a stunning performance by Penélope Cruz. Talk to Her (2002), on the other hand, is one of Almodóvar's worst conceived: A male nurse rapes a woman out of her coma. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge. Tickets and showtimes.

Rock

-- Atlas Sound is the side-project of Bradford Cox, the front man of the Atlanta band Deerhunter. Cox cushions pop melodies with a layer of reverb and guitar feedback. It's a psychedelia that's soft but challenging, and his recordings bring to mind the work of 4AD labelmates His Name is Alive and the Cocteau Twins. Middle East Downstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, 8:00pm. $14.
