Wednesday Happenings

Movies

-- The Brattle screens the products of the Boston Film Race, which asked filmmaking teams to create a short film in 24 hours. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle Street, Harvard Square, 9pm. (KS)

Music

-- We Are Scientists bring beakers of cheeky indie rock to brighten your day. With Oxford Collapse and Apache Beat. Middle East Downstairs, 472 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, $15. (KS)

-- Sera Cahoone, former Band of Horses drummer, showcases her singing, songwriting, and composition skills at the Paradise opening for Cali crooner Matt Costa. Paradise, 967 Comm. Ave., doors at 7pm. $18 [Tix] (KS)

-- At first glance, Detroit garage rockers the Dirtbombs don't have much in common with the swirly, droney music of Spiritualized, but the two bands share a foundation in the blues and gospel music of the American south that gives them a similar righteousness. Come to rock out, stay to gaze at your shoes. Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. The Roxy, 279 Tremont St., 7:30pm. $25.

-- Asylum Street Spankers, from Austin, TX, play old fashioned music with new fashioned dirty words. Club Passim, 47 Palmer St., Cambridge, 8:00pm. $25/$23.

Free Booze

-- Wednesdays are difficult for everybody, but the promise of free martinis should pull JP residents through the doldrums. Featuring 44 North vodka, New Amsterdam gin, and light refreshments. Alchemist Lounge, 435 S. Huntington Ave., Jamaica Plain, 6:30pm-8:30pm. Free.
