I think it was much more than a playful tweak. Today Shaughnessy said Manny "attacked' McCormick. Right after it happened, Bostonist described it as "going after the team's traveling secretary". Not sure what the difference is. The point isn't necessarily what happened, which was not much more than a shove, but that he had a physical confrontation with a coworker. His actions were inexcusable. In the real world, that just might get you fired. But, Manny is in Manny's world, and in that bizarre realm, he can be a punk, a bully and a spoiled brat and get what he wanted and that was out of Boston and free agency after this season. I think the childish games had run their course, even with teammates, and ownership/management had enough. Fans, too. The drawback is the Sox lost a very intimidating presence in the lineup. In the midst of being swept by the Angels, it was Manny taking K-Rod deep in a game the Sox lost. It was an indication that Manny still had it and would still have it in October when LAA might play Boston. Jason Bay will be pitched to in key situations when Manny thrived until he proves he can deliver. For this deal to be good for Boston, he has to deliver.

That's true, Harmy. I spent so much time reading the good-riddance columns in the local press this morning, that for a while I thought Manny punched the guy, keyed his car, kidnapped the Lindbergh baby and was on the Grassy Knoll. All we know is, it was somewhere between a right hook and a playful tweak of the gentleman's nose.

"Or, in fairness, punching out team employees." Whoa there a minute. Let's not turn this into the "Bledsoe in a moshpit" meme. "Punching out" is much stronger language than what was reported. The strongest words used have been pushed or shoved. Also, it should be "high-fiving fans in the middle of a play" as I would hope he does at least high-five some fans.

But they did trade Nomar to 4 scrubs in '04 and look how that worked out for them. Don't get me wrong, I'll miss Manny - but I'm not going to miss the bs that came along with him. You honestly think he was going to play the rest of the season and give the Sox 100% effort? Please. He would have pulled what he did in '06 and call it a year or if he did play he'd make an ass out of himself and the team would be the ones suffering in the end.
