Before Bostonist introduces you to Charlie Zink, we’d like to discuss Josh Beckett’s 5-1 win last night against the Chicago White Sox. Even without David Ortiz in the line up, the Red Sox were able to leave the Windy City splitting the series and the Beckett we were use to seeing last season made another appearance.
Beckett, who’s now 11-8, threw for eight innings, getting tagged for one run off of seven hits. He struck out eight and walked no one. Thanks to this performance last night and the bats coming alive in the 7th, this lead to a 1-2-3 inning by Papelbon on in the ninth. John Danks did have a no-hitter going on last night, but feel free to send a thank you note to Kevin Youkilis for ruining that one.
J.D. Drew, who filled in as designated hitter, went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs. After having sunday off, Jed Lowrie went 1 for 3 and drove in another 2 runs. Ortiz was out last night after complaining of soreness in the wrist he had surgery on. Before you start freaking out, just remember the Devil Rays just put Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford on the dl.
As for tonight’s pitcher, the Red Sox decided to have one knuckleball pitcher replace another knuckleball pitcher. Bostonist would like to welcome Charlie Zink. Zink, who’s been with the Red Sox organization since 2003, is finally getting his first big league start. This year in Pawtucket, he’s seen probably one of his best showings yet. He’s 13-4 with a 2.89 era and was voted into the International League’s All-Star game. Back in college, Zink was managed by Red Sox legend, Luis Tiant and it was actually Tiant who recommend him to the Sox.
