South End Buttery Expansion
314 Shawmut Ave, at Union Park; South End; 617-482-1015
News of the South End Buttery's much-discussed expansion has been--no pun intended--churning around in the rumor mill for so long, we're surprised that it won't actually open its doors until tomorrow. When the owners announced their intention to add a nighttime gathering place to their upscale bakery, a favorite fueling station for nearby condo-dwellers, Shawmut Ave residents worried that their quiet side street would be endlessly disturbed by late-night revels. However, the image of South End sophisticates and suburban destination diners running buckwild through the streets like a crowd of Tufts undergrads, throwing bottles of aged pinot noir and lamb bones through condo windows and getting into fisticuffs over Foucault, just didn't stick. And so the foodies have won out: on Aug 14, the Buttery will begin serving dinner in a sleek 35-seat back room. Don't be surprised to see a Bostonist or two, faces buried in a dish of glazed pork, when doors open. But never fear, old fogies of Shawmut Ave--we promise to keep the noise down.
