A ten-run inning wasn't enough to hold a lead on Tuesday, but a nine-run inning was last night. That's partly just the vicissitudes of baseball, and partly the difference between wet-behind-the-ears Charlie Zink and pretty-reliable Daisuke Matsuzaka.
The Sox pounded yet another hapless Texas pitcher (Tommy Hunter, and we wouldn't bother memorizing that name) for a nine-run second inning, highlighted by another Ortiz 3-run home run amid 13 Sox batters. Other offensive stars for the game: Pedroia (3-for-5), Lowrie (3-for-4) and Youk (2-for-4). Special credit also to Julio Lugo, who hasn't hit into an inning-ending double play in over a month.
Meanwhile, Dice-K did his Dice-K thing, going seven strong innings, and giving up a bunch of walks, but getting out of trouble. Delcarmen and Timlin each pitched a perfect inning to preserve the 10-0 win and the sweep. Toronto comes in tonight, and Paul Byrd will make his Sox debut.
Commissioner Bud Selig says his "confidence is growing" that there will soon be technology to add instant replay to baseball. The league says that it will only be used to aid umpires in fair/foul calls and whether a hit was a home run or not, so we're only five years away from automated ball/strike calling and "This Close Play At Second Review Brought To You By Miller Lite." Go ahead, tell us we're wrong.
The Rays won again, but suffered another injury when closer Troy Percival wrecked his knee fielding a bunt. Unfortunately, it seems that injuries only make Tampa Bay stronger. ESPN's Jayson Stark, meanwhile says LA fans shouldn't fall in love with Manny.
Comings and goings: The Patriots signed grizzled vet John Lynch to provide a little depth in the secondary. The Celtics inked rookie first-round pick J.R. Giddens. Changes in the media: Tony Massarotti is leaving the Herald to be the main online guy for Boston.com. And at the Globe, Amalie Benjamin is now the lead Sox beat writer, replacing Gordon Edes, who moved on to the Interwebz.

Week Around the Ists, November 1–7

Good choice with Amalie Benjamin -- her game recaps are always crisply written and often hilarious.
hey, i heard that this thing called the olympics is happening? are those sports?
Not in Boston, they are not.
The second clause should be read as emphasizing the first clause above, not as a double-negative.
You're right - this is the best month that Julio Lugo has had since coming to Boston.
It's not quite Wally Pipp and Lou Gehrig, but I'll take Lowrie at SS for the next few years.
