Sunday Happenings

august-moon.jpgMoon Festivals

-- The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, comes early to Boston this year. Traditionally held near the autumn equinox, the festival marks the summer harvest with a variety of baked goods. Expect mooncakes, martial artists, craft vendors, and, that most Chinese of traditions, a volleyball tournament. Chinatown, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free.

Film Festivals

-- The Bicycle Film Festival winds down its Boston run with a bike ride and a bike brunch. We liked yesterday's screening so much, that we might just be on hand. The ride leaves from the Christian Science Center Plaza, 175 Huntington Ave., 11:30 a.m. Grand hosts the brunch, 374 Somerville Ave., Somerville, 1:30 p.m.

16mm Film

-- The Galaxy Gala pits experimental 16mm film crews Sweet 16mm and Architectures of the Sun against Providence rock band the Glass Shivers. Live film manipulations and postrock surely the traditional way to begin the work week in some professions. Milky Way Lounge, 403 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, 9 p.m. $5.

Movies

-- Scripted by celebrated Russian poet Gennady Shpalikov, Walking the Streets of Moscow (1963) was an early triumph of the so-called Khrushchev Thaw, the period of reduced censorship following the death of Stalin. The film is essentially a romantic comedy that follows the exploits of a hick from Siberia as he makes his way through Moscow. The film's sharp dialogue and stunning cinematography (from the lens of Vadim Yusov, later Tarkovsky's cameraman of choice) make it an enduring example of a largely forgotten period of Soviet filmmaking. Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, 1 p.m. $5.
