Saturday Happenings

red-heroine.jpgGreek Festivals

-- This weekend, you can choose your Greek festival. On this side of the river, check out Brookline's Greek Fest 2008. Bostonist operatives have indicated that there are tables full of Ouzo. And plenty of Greek food and culture, naturally. If you live north of Boston and, like the vampires, cannot cross running water, Somerville has its own version. Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 162 Goddard Ave., Brookline; or Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 29 Central St., Somerville. All day. Free.

New England Culture Fest

-- Celebrate diversity with an amazing lineup of international bands, crafts, and food. Music includes Samba Tremeterra, Incus, and Juanito Pascual. 2-10pm, 172 Middle Street, Lowell. $5 advance, $10 day of. (KS)

Rock and Roll Yard Sales

-- Pick through the corpse of rock and roll at the Rock and Roll Yard Sale, which features hipster duds, LP records, and other nostalgia items. Unlike competing yard sales, this one starts in the afternoon. Rock on. Union Square Plaza, Somerville, 3 p.m. Free.

The Rugged Lands of Shaolin

-- One of the most venerated kung-fu movies, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978) retells the martial art's origin myth. Lau Kar-leung's masterpiece tells the story of a commoner who becomes an initiate at the Shaolin Temple, eager to exact revenge. The film still reverberates in popular culture, most notably as a touchstone for the Wu Tang Clan. Part of Chinatown's Films at the Gate series. 10 Hudson St., Chinatown, 7:30 p.m. Free.

-- Across the river, catch a screening of Red Heroine, a 1929 silent Chinese martial arts flick, accompanied by a live soundtrack provided by Devil Music Ensemble. Union Square Plaza, Somerville, 8 p.m. Free.

Folk Music

-- Matt Pryor of the Get Up Kids visits Harpers Ferry accompanied by Kevine Devine and Faces on Film's Mark Fiore. Should be an atypically laid-back evening for the Ferry. Harpers Ferry, 158 Brighton Ave, Allston.
