Sports Redux: It Begins

Are we ready to put last season's unpleasantness behind us? Are we ready to internalize that the exact number of wins doesn't matter, so long as it all ends with a three-game winning streak? are we, in the parlance of our times, ready for some football?

The Patriots sure are. Steve Buckley says, "this will not be a season for calling off the dogs." Jim McBride crunches the numbers and says the Pats win 31-10. Eric Wilbur searches high and low to find anybody picking the Chiefs. Meanwhile, KC quarterback Brodie Croyle (yeah, we had to look that up) isn't going to let his 0-6 career record keep him from some ill-placed confidence.

Tim Wakefield...well, let's just say he didn't have a good day, as he couldn't find the strike zone, thus geting shellacked and sent to the showers early as the Sox got blitzed by Texas 15-8. The bright spot for the Sox, if there is one, is that Kevin Youkilis came back from his week of injury and homered, which is de rigueur for any Sox player coming back from an injury this week. At least the Sox didn't lose any ground in the East, as Tampa Bay gave up an extra-inning grand slam to Gregg Zaun and Toronto.

It wasn't a good Saturday for any of our local teams, to be honest. BC flopped in their home opener, giving up a late lead and losing to Georgia Tech 19-16. And the Revolution would certainly like to forget their 4-0 loss in Columbus. Coach Steve Nicol said, "When you can't run, you can't compete, and at the present time we can't run." We're no experts, but we'd think that a team that can't run would lose by a lot more than 4-0.

Our heads kind of hurt after reading this Globe article about how rooting for a winning team does great things for a city. We're prepared to concede, as psychologists tell us, that being a fan of a good team makes people happier than sticking with a bad team. We buy that. But are the current good times really helping John Q. Bostonfan make more money or get a date? Or are we just doing it wrong?
