Saturday Happenings

Word_From_The_Genius_original_cover.jpgMotorized Hipsters

-- Depending on where you stand on the issue, there is nothing cooler or more insufferable than a moped gang, especially one that celebrates, as the Somerville Moped-Scooter Rally & Concours does, the "3R's" ("riding, racing and reducing your carbon footprint"). The event includes a screening of the Who's film Quadrophenia so that mod greenhorns will have some ideas to take with them to the hairdresser. Union Square Plaza, 6 to 10 p.m. Free.

Duels of the Iron Mic

-- If you form like Voltron but lack a head, you might do worse than to recruit the GZA, regarded by some as the Wu-Tang Clan's foremost lyricist. His raps are deeply allusive, shifting rapidly from Five Percenter theology to nicknames for his favorite sneakers. Harper's Ferry, 158 Brighton Ave., Allston, 8 p.m. $25.

DJs in Deep Concentration

-- DJ Premiere, who came up as half of Gang Starr, has turned out productions for more than half of the rappers on the East Coast. His annus mirabilis may have been 1994, when he produced Jeru the Damaja's The Sun Rises in the East and contributed a handful of masterpieces to Nas's Illmatic, but even the joints he made last week are bangers. Spinning tonight with the rapper Big Shug. GoodLife Bar & Lounge, 28 Kingston St., 9 p.m. $15.

Painting Parties

-- It's a Bring Your Own Paint event. Promoters Simply.Out.Standing will provide the canvases—and the DJs—you bring the paint and the talent. The event is called Splash, if that gives you any idea of the level of skill required to get a chance to paint. The Re-Up, 1 Brighton Ave., Allston, 1 to 7:30 p.m. Free.
