Sexy Globe Sex Scandal

globe-racks.jpgLeave it the Boston Globe to get itself embroiled in a sex scandal that didn't even happen in Boston.

Globe metro reporter Tania deLuzuriaga is one half of a steamy 2007 email exchange that has embarrassed the schools chief of the Miami-Dade school system, the fourth largest in the U.S., and raised serious questions about the professional ethics of both parties.

The scandal erupted after email exchanges reputedly between deLuzuriaga, formerly the Miami Herald's schools reporter, and Alberto Carvalho, then an associate superintendent, started circulating on the internet this week, in advance of Carvalho's promotion.

The emails, which can be found linked here, contain descriptions of deLuzuriaga's personal grooming habits and their likely effect on her sexual desirability, in addition to frank admissions of love. Carvalho, 43, is married.

The most damning emails, however, hint at an improper professional relationship between the two. They contain repeated references to the means by which the pair could "help" each other and discussions about strategies to handle the school budget crisis that was ultimately instrumental in Carvalho's rise to the top.

If the emails are genuine, deLuzuriaga is the very embodiment of class; she forwarded personal emails to Carvalho written by her Herald colleague Matthew Pinzur about the emerging schools scandal.

Carvalho initially claimed that the emails were doctored but later recanted. DeLuzuriaga has not commented.

Even pretend journalists like Bostonist are aware that ethics prohibits an intimate relationship between a reporter and the subject she is, erm, covering. If the emails are genuine, they represent a lapse of judgment even more severe than the one that led deLuzuriaga to break Massachusetts traffic laws on a scooter. No reaction from the Globe yet, but the Herald is practically salivating.

No word on deLuzuriaga's relationship with Boston Schools Superintendent Carol R. Johnson.
