Too Much Free Music for One Weekend

sam phillips

Your T pass might melt, but there's hours and hours of free entertainment all around town. It's true year round, but the quality of free music will be damn high for the next 48 hours or so.

Newbury Comics is celebrating its 30th anniversary this weekend with 30% discounts, giveaways, and in-store performances at all of their locations. As Bostonist is typing, UK rockers The Kooks are playing at Newbury Street, and GZA will be signing autographs there at 5:30 p.m. At the new Faneuil Hall store, Boston-based Tulsa is playing at 3 p.m., and Los Lonely Boys will serenade the masses (that can fit) at 5 p.m. You'll find this Bostonist in Harvard Square to hear the criminally under-rated Sam Phillips (3:30 p.m.) before her show at the Somerville Theatre, and we might return for Apollo Sunshine (7 p.m.). Of the Sunday performances, only Bang Camaro at the Norwood store's grand opening (3 p.m.) is noteworthy.

Things are getting shoegazey and psychedelic in Union Square with the Somerville Moped-Scooter Rally. The falsely advertised Big Disapointments kick off the music around 6:30 p.m. The Sharp Darts make their live debut with a short set (7:30 p.m.) followed by more Lockgroove alumni, Broken River Prophet (8 p.m.). As a last-minute addition, The Prime Movers will prove to anyone within earshot why they are one of the best bands playing at 9 p.m.

More musical freebies after the jump.

There's more than "aht" in North End's Columbus Park for the Boston Arts Festival. Both weekend afternoons are filled with entertainment, but the highlights are The Everyday Visuals (5 p.m.) and Bleu (5:45 p.m.) on Saturday; and Iyeoka (4:15 p.m.), The Tarbox Ramblers (5 p.m.), and Bon Savants (5:45 p.m.) on Sunday.

From Noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Allston Village Street Fair is just funkier and hipper than other cookie-cutter festivals: That's how Allston rolls. That whole section of Harvard Ave is blocked off to the irritation of countless drivers. A bunch of food vendors and street performers will be there. It's hard to say who's playing when, but performers include: Casey Desmond, Three Day Threshold, Barnicle, The Allstonians, Bad Ash, Logan 5 And The Runners, Nate Gibson & The Gas House Gang.

If you have any energy left, The Milky Way Lounge has been offering free music almost every Sunday this summer. The Wonderful Spells is one of those bands comprised of relatives and childhood friends that could charm any crowd with power-pop. Movers & Shakers doesn't offer sugar with its strong, steaming cup of rock, but the band stirs in a lot of heart and grit and decades of American music. It's hard to believe The Weight is really from Brooklyn. The band sounds like it was grown in a laboratory from recovered bits of Gram Parsons' DNA. The music should start around 9:30 p.m., and you don't need to be awake on Monday morning.
