You'd think it would be a pretty lousy day: you're Danny Ainge or Doc Rivers. You've learned that Darius Miles really is going to have to serve that pesky 10-game suspension. You know, the one everyone expected because the NBA ruled that he violated the league's anti-drug policy. And you don't even know if he'll be healthy enough to play come the dawn of the new season.
It's not the way you want to start your weekend, right? So what do you do to turn that Celtic frown upside down? FIELD TRIP! WHITE HOUSE!
The Celts visited Pennsylvania Avenue on Friday for the traditional championship visit, where they presented President Bush an official Celtics jersey (#43, if you're curious) and listened to Bush butcher the team's "Ubuntu" rally cry. Most of the team was on hand; we heard no reports of sick grandmothers for those missing.
On the Red Sox front, the Bartolo Colon Missing Person Search was called off Friday. It was uncertain for most of the day whether Colon, now hanging out in the Dominican Republic, was suspended or placed on the restricted list, but Friday night's reports indicated the Colon decided he'd rather stay in the DR than hang out in the bullpen. We'd say that we'll miss him, but it wasn't as if he'd made much of an impact on the team this season anyway.
In game news, the Sox earned a much-needed 4-3 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto, thanks largely to a step-up-and-deliver, two-RBI, fifth-inning double from Sean Casey. Paul Byrd earned a hard-fought no decision, going six innings and recording six hits, three earned runs, two strikeouts and one walk.
The Rays also took their Friday night game against the Twins, again bolstered by Haverhill's own Carlos Pena. Their magic number? One. And people said they were too young/inexperienced/from freakin' Tampa Bay...
